That's a cruel thing to say, but it's been done to me often enough in the past: you find yourself saying ordinary things and the person next to you is suddenly being witty. Oh yes, that's happened to me often enough. It's sort of primitive law of survival – find someone worse off that yourself and beside them you will blossom.
